What Is Food-Grade Silicone? Certifications Explained

2026-08-05 · Industry

Food-grade silicone meets food safety standards, free of harmful plasticizers and stable at high temperatures.

FDA is the US standard, testing migration substances under simulated food conditions.

LFGB is the stricter German standard, a requirement for the European market.

To verify: request certificates, do a smell test, and a high-temperature test above 200℃.

Confirm your supplier provides valid test reports with batch traceability for consistent quality.

One more note: food-grade silicone is NOT the same as medical-grade. Medical-grade (USP Class VI) is stricter on biocompatibility for skin, mucous membrane, or implanted contact; food-grade meets FDA 21 CFR 177.2600 or LFGB for food-contact articles. Choose based on final use, not just "higher grade".

As a silicone manufacturer, we recommend brands confirm compound and hardness during sampling, since different formulations (anti-yellowing, antibacterial, flame-retardant additives) affect cost and compliance. Locking BOM and test items early smooths mass production and avoids rework.
